‘Hypnosis Could save the NHS Millions’

Hypnosis treatments could be used on a range of medical conditions, according to a group of medical experts reported by The Belfast Telegraph

The Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine Section of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) believe the therapies help relieve pain and stress.

But it warned that patients need to be protected from rogue practitioners who cause harm and end up costing the NHS more. (This in my opinion is easily rectified by the NHS only using recognised Hypnotherapists that are registered with national governing bodies like CNHC, APHP & NCH)

Jacky Owens, the president of the RSM’s Hypnosis Section, said: “Conditions such as depression, pain and irritable bowel syndrome affect millions of people in the UK and at great cost to the NHS. But hypnosis can often work where other treatments have been unsuccessful.”(Stress based health condition benefit greatly from hypnosis sessions as once the underlying stress and physical stress responses are eradicated or reduced via hypnosis, their condition’s symptoms lessen or go completely)

Ms Owens, a qualified nurse who uses hypnosis in her work with cancer patients, added: “If doctors were able to refer patients to properly trained hypnotherapists, it would save a cash-strapped NHS a great deal of money.”

She said making hypnosis a standard part of the “NHS toolbox” would lead to the public becoming better informed about the procedure and mean that vulnerable patients would be less likely to turn to “hypno-cowboys”. (I.e. Non-registered with a UK recognised governing body)

Ms Owens added: “We’re confident that with more research, hypnosis will be recognised as an extremely useful tool to be used alongside mainstream medicine. What we need are doctors, dentists, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists, radiotherapists – the whole gamut of people who treat patients – trained in using hypnosis as another tool in their treatment programme.” (Not sure I agree with this bit, just because you’re a doctor doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily be a good hypnotherapist-leave the hypnosis to the hypnotherapists-to be able to teach patients relaxation and breathing techniques though would definately be a good add-on to their already many skills)

A Department of Health spokesman said: “We believe in patients being able to make informed choices about their treatment and in clinicians having the freedom to prescribe the treatment they feel most appropriate for that patient after discussing the risks and benefits.”

“They should always consider the availability of a suitably qualified practitioner as part of this process.”

“Our plans to modernise the NHS will give clinicians more freedom to commission the services that best meet their patients’ needs.” (Choice is always beneficial in any circustances)

(In my opinion, the mindset of the patient is imperative to their aid their recovery, the only side effects that hypnosis may have, is that you create a happier and healthier lifestyle. By being able to turn any stress into positive stress which in turn can be channeled and used to create future wellbeing J )

Also the effects of hypnosis – the physical and mental changes, will last alot longer than a bottle of pills!

Stop Procrastinating – the easy way!

Some simple mind skills to enable you to stop procrastinating and actually get things done!

Here are some simple instructions to follow that will help you to think differently, which will allow you to act differently which will give you different results!

You don’t need any special skills to be able to do these techniques, just read through the instructions fully and then I suggest you read them out loud and record them onto an audio player to then play back and follow the instructions or alternatively do the technique with someone else reading out the instructions for you to follow.

Relax – read instructions through – have fun!

When you complete the techniques, make sure you are in a safe environment, it’s your choice whether you want to close your eyes or not, but many people do prefer to do so as it enhances their inner vision-or so they believe!

 

  1. Choose a situation where you feel out of control – not because you don’t have the knowledge or the skills, but because your emotions get the better of you. Examples may be fear of success or fear of failure. E.g Not writing a book for fear it becomes a best-seller or not starting up a Home Business for fear of failure.

    2. Understand now that this is simply an attitude or belief that is stopping you from doing something that you know you could do, so decide what is the opposite to your fear and imagine what you will be doing when you are back in control. Choose a specific example of this behaviour, preferably one that is immediately testable. E.g Writing the book Or Creating a business plan.

    3. When you have this in mind then sit comfortably, then imagine floating out of your body, imagine yourself sitting a little behind and just above from your physical body. In your mind’s eye/imagination, see the back of your head, the width of your shoulders. See what your hair looks like, what your clothes look like from this point of view, looking down at the back of yourself.  Make this picture as fully dimensional as possible.

(Remember: This technique uses your natural visualization and imagination skills, you do not need to ‘actually’ see it, to know that your inner mind is following along and doing exactly what’s being asked-so relax and trust that your mind is playing along-just fine!)

4. Now, imagine that you see yourself starting to stand up, and, as that happens, actually stand, so you are in precisely the same position as your imagined image.

(Now sit back down)

5. Repeat this thought and action several times, making it faster and faster each time, until you feel yourself being propelled and pulled to your feet by the vividness of your image.

6.Now imagine that you are standing just behind and slightly above yourself just like before but this time imagine looking at the back of yourself doing the activity that you identified in step 2. Make sure that you are in the same position that you have been before looking down on the back of yourself, in exactly the same way that you did in the standing exercise. Now see yourself doing the activity.

7. Run the activity from start to finish 5 times, stepping into the physical image each time. Then see yourself doing it another 5 times doing it faster and faster, then 5 times more even faster, stepping into the image each time, feeling the same ‘pull’ as before.

8. Test by starting the activity and following it all the way through to the end, 5 times.

Now sit down quietly, close your eyes if not already closed for a few moments and imagine how your life will be different and better as this new skill generalizes out into other, equally useful and appropriate areas of your life.

See how your life will be, imagine the picture, make the colours bright and bold, the picture big and in your face!, imagine how you feel, what you think, how you act, what you see, what you act like, notice how you think about you, what you say to yourself and recognize the positive feelings that you are experiencing.

Now, take a deep breath, imagine your eye lids are the lens of a camera and imagine taking a snap shot of that great picture of yourself-(click-click-blink-blink).

That camera imagine of your inner vision can be called upon at any time now you have it as a blueprint in your mind.

In the future just relax and allow yourself to remember that image and it will come to your mind’s eye clearly and quickly and remind you of what you do now.

How To Deal With Anxiety Attacks

Anxiety attacks can hit you without warning or you can build up to it, you may know exactly how you create it or you may not have any idea what sets it off, but however you manage it, you know it when it strikes!

Your heart beats ten to the dozen, you begin to sweat and or go clammy, you may get a rush to the head or dizziness and for some people they have the feeling that they’re going to die.

An anxiety attack can make you feel out of control and unbalanced but a few simple steps can get you back in control and back in balance very quickly, enabling you to get on with things and make rational actions and decisions. When anxiety ‘strikes’ it’s a reaction to your mind perceiving a danger and then reacting to it in “flight or fight” mode.

When the body is in ‘Flight or Fight’ mode most of your blood rushes from your brain to your extremities, so that they have more energy & power. All other body parts/functions are sort of put into ‘standby’ whilst this happens.

So what can we do to avoid this response to danger?  How can we stop the blood rush from our brains?

Here’s how:

1) Place your thumbs on your temples (just at the side of your head by your eyebrow ends) and your fingers on the ridge about an inch above your eyes (on your forehead). This then forces the blood to come back to your head, clearing your thoughts and settling your moods. It is best to be sitting down doing this as the return of oxygenated blood to your brain can sometimes leave you feeling a little woozy for a few moments.

Do this for a few minutes and then when you get up, get up slowly.

2) Change your stance, move your body, wiggle and stretch. Stand, feet hip distance apart, knees relaxed. Swing your arms to relax and lower your shoulders. Stretch and reach your hands high into the air and spread your fingers wide. Look upwards and smile (You don’t have to believe it-just do it!). Seriously no idea how it works but doing this somehow tells your body to release some feel good chemicals! :)

3) Run cool water over your pulse points which are on the back of your neck (or out cold damp cloth against it) or the inside of your wrists. The cold water will not only cool you down, but slow down the ‘rush’ within   you.

4) Take a long deep breath, holding it for a couple of seconds and repeat 3 times, breathing deeply into your tummy, (so you feel your tummy go out when you breathe in and then go back in when you breathe out) it’s also a fantastic way to cool and calm down.

Next time you feel anxious give one of these a go or all of them and see what a difference it makes to your recovery and the bonus of it is, that the more often you do these techniques, the quicker your unconscious will take them on board as a habit and do these in dangerous situations instead of creating the anxiety – now that is Cool!

Why?!

On Friday, I visited a friend that I hadn’t seen for a long time.

Instead of the night out that I had expected, we ended up stripping wallpaper from her friends front room from 8pm until 3am………….

Perseverance, determination and a sense of we’ve started so god help us we’ve come this far we have to finish it!

Drove us to get through it, but at times it was tough…REALLY REALLY, tough.

Our fingers, arms, backs and legs ached. (really ached)

The wallpaper sometimes came off in thin strips or miniscule bits.

The steamer made the room extremely hot and sweaty, plus the less we had to do, the harder it seemed to get!

A kind of automatic feeling took over, the WHY of why we were doing it in the first place, was enough to spur me/us on……….

It seems to me that anything we do in life is fabulous when its all going great guns and we’re having a whale of a time, but what happens when the going gets tough, the rewards are not what we expect or deserve or the fun has just gone out of it?

For instance, hidden behind our strained necks, aching shoulder blades & weaning sense of humour!

As the decorating example shows the difference between success and failure is simple, well it’s what I think, it’s all based on the WHY.

WHY are we doing it? WHY is it so important to achieve?

WHY do we want to get this right?

When the WHY is bigger than yourself it spurs you on.

In this incident, the WHY was that the person could for the first time feel like their house would really feel like a comfortable family home once they felt it was decorated properly.

That wasn’t important to me really, I am a wherever I lay my hat is my home type, but to her it meant the world and because it was that important to her and her happiness, it was important to me, I want her to be happy  :)

Whatever you are doing, whatever you are hoping to achieve, ask yourself – What is your WHY?

The WHY will keep you going through the hard and not so enjoyable times. The WHY will spur you on and make it happen.

When thinking of the WHY, think bigger than yourself (like my example with the house to turn into a real family home).

When the reason you are doing something is bigger than your needs or wants, it seems to be much more compelling to achieve!

Go ahead and have a go, who knows what you will achieve and who you will benefit along the way!  :)

Local hypnotherapist meets new national standards

A Home Counties and London based hypnotherapist has become one of the first in the country to achieve a new national standard of excellence for his/ her therapy.

Loran Northey has been registered by the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the UK regulator for complementary healthcare.

The recognition places her at the forefront of a national drive to provide a benchmark for standards and safety for the public. Practitioners registered with the CNHC meet national occupational standards and abide by a rigorous code of conduct, performance and ethics.

Loran Northey said: “Achieving registration is not only great news for me and my clients, but a vital step for hypnotherapy.”

“This is the time of year when many people are struggling to keep up their new year resolutions. The most popular uses for hypnotherapy are around stress and anxiety conditions, weight control and addictive behaviours such as smoking and alcohol abuse.”

Hypnotherapy is one of 11 disciplines now recognised by the CNHC. Members of the public can search the CNHC register to find practitioners in their local area. More than 40,000 searches were carried out last year.

By providing a verification of standards, the CNHC allows GPs, hospitals, private healthcare providers and insurance companies to refer patients to hypnotherapy practitioners or to make hypnotherapy more readily available in health centres, clinics, doctors’ surgeries and hospitals.
