Here are some top tips to control depression, they are simple things that you can do to change the way that you think & feel, once you do these simple things for about 3 weeks they become a habit & you will do them without even thinking about it-enabling you to make positive changes in your life, easily & effortlessly.

Top Tips

1) Write a gratitude list everynight before sleeping

List 5 things you are grateful for, they can be big or small - i.e, my cat, Eastenders, my home, community centre, my childrens health – get into the habit of acknowledging & being grateful for the good things you have around you. Its said that if you live with ‘the attitude of gratitude’ you will attract even more good things to you if its the good things to you, if its the good things that you are focusing on-go on, do it!

2) Get walking

Whether its around a park or around the shops-who cares, just get out n about!

Walking makes us feel good and being outdoors in the sunlight increases and lightens our mood, so take a simple stroll every day, it doesnt have to be a marathon-just get out there.

3) Talk to people daily.

You dont have to become a master speaker or anything, just say hello to the person at the bus stop next to you or have small talk to the person in the library (though be quiet!) smile at others in the doctors waiting room and ask questions in the supermarket. Go to a local group, meeting or activity where you can have social interaction, you can include yourself as much or as little as you like at the time, but, include yourself in life.

4) Play and pretend!

When you find yourself thinking dark, negative thoughts-stop-be aware of them and think the opposite………just because you can!……….if you can picture bad things happening, hear doom & gloom going on in your head then you can change the picture & the sounds to do the opposite-its all just play and pretend-if you are going to imagine things, why not make them good things? For example, if you are going to a works do and you think that no-one will talk to you, imagine yourself dressed up and having a great time with your colleagues (it doesnt have to be real-just do it) …..its the stories, the pictures, the self talk and the sounds that we create in our heads that create our outcome-you are already playing & pretending only you are doing it negatively if you are doing depression, so, if you can do it negatively and so well (since you can make yourself feel so bad), then you can do it positively – just play and pretend…you will be amazed how quickly this simple act will make you feel better, if you just choose to do it-go on, give it a go!

5) Make the right choices

We choose how we feel, act & think – all by whats going on in our heads-its not circumstances around us that cause negativity, but what we do as a reaction to them. If you find yourself looking in the mirror saying negative things to yourself-say ‘thanks for that, now stop!’ its all play and pretend, just acknowledge the thought, thank it & then tell them to stop! Once the pattern or habit for negative self talk is changed, the changes you feel can be amazing!

These tips are simple and just need to be followed, they dont need to be thought about or analysed, they just work if you do them, why-because you are in control of you-once you choose to be positive and have a better life & are committed to making small steps daily to accomplish that, then the incredible journey begins!
